UPI abroad: where Indian travellers can actually pay by QR now
By the Gagariya desk · 26 Jul 2026 IST · 1 min read
Scan, pay, done — in Paris. UPI's international rollout has moved faster than most people noticed.
Which countries work today?
France, Singapore, the UAE, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan all accept UPI at participating merchants through NPCI International's tie-ups with local networks.
What do you need before you travel?
An Indian bank account linked to a UPI app, and in some apps an explicit international-payments toggle. Turn it on before you leave; some banks require re-verification that is painful over hotel Wi-Fi.
What does it cost?
The scan itself is free. The currency conversion is not — your bank applies its forex rate, and that spread is where the cost hides. Compare it against your card's forex markup before assuming UPI is cheaper.
What to watch next: NPCI has said more corridors are in negotiation; the Gulf corridors matter most by remittance volume.
Questions people ask
- Can I use UPI in Dubai?
- Yes. The UAE accepts UPI at participating merchants through NPCI International partnerships. You need a UPI app linked to an Indian bank account, with international payments enabled.
- Is there a fee for paying by UPI abroad?
- The QR payment itself is free, but your bank applies a foreign-exchange conversion rate. The spread on that rate is the real cost, and it varies by bank and app.
