European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will step down on 7 February 2027, the ECB said on 29 October 2026. Lagarde, 70, has notified European Council President António Costa of her intention to leave on that date, bringing forward an exit that was not due until the end of her eight-year term on 31 October 2027.

The announcement ends months of speculation about her future. In a short video message, Lagarde said: "It has been a great pride and a huge privilege to serve this institution." She added: "I leave this institution with a sense of good work done and an ECB that is fit for the future."

Costa said the process to choose her successor would begin immediately and proceed without delay. The ECB said the appointment will follow the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union procedures.

Why is the timing significant?

The early exit gives current EU leaders the chance to pick the next ECB president while pro-EU French President Emmanuel Macron remains in office. France holds a presidential election in April 2027, and polls have favoured far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. The timing has therefore been read as allowing a successor to be chosen before that election, although Lagarde herself has not said this was her reason.

Only three months ago, Lagarde dismissed talk of an early exit, citing inflation "clouds" on the horizon. The ECB is now battling inflation risks from an Iran war-driven oil shock, at a time when a sharp rise in bond yields, especially in France, threatens growth. The bank is in the middle of a rate-hiking cycle aimed at stopping the oil price shock from feeding into other prices and wages, and it left interest rates unchanged in a well-telegraphed move on the same day as the announcement.

Who could replace Lagarde?

Two former central bank governors are widely seen as frontrunners, but neither has been chosen and both names remain reported speculation, not a decision. Klaas Knot, the former Dutch central bank governor, is backed by the Dutch government. Pablo Hernández de Cos, the former Bank of Spain governor who is now general manager of the Bank for International Settlements, is supported by Spain.

Berenberg chief economist Holger Schmieding said the early exit was "no surprise and does not change the outlook for ECB policies". He added that only the timing of the announcement came as a modest surprise.

What changed?

The change is one of timing, not of the job itself. Lagarde took office in November 2019 as a former French finance minister and former managing director of the International Monetary Fund. Her eight-year term was scheduled to run until 31 October 2027. Stepping down on 7 February 2027 moves that exit forward by about nine months, and makes her only the second ECB president to resign early. The first head of the bank, Wim Duisenberg, left after five years.

Her departure is also part of a wider reshuffle at the top of the ECB. Executive board member Isabel Schnabel leaves in early January, on 3 January according to one account, to take a role at the International Monetary Fund. Chief economist Philip Lane's term ends on 31 May. Berenberg chief economist Holger Schmieding said EU leaders are likely to fill the three vacancies as a package.

Why did she resign?

Here the accounts differ, and none of the explanations beyond Lagarde's own words is confirmed. Lagarde herself spoke only of pride in her service and of leaving an ECB fit for the future. She has said she would not be a candidate for the French presidency but would advocate for pro-European values in France in whichever capacity she deemed most efficient.

One source with direct knowledge of the matter said she resigned so she could weigh in on political matters in France and globally, noting that as ECB president she was expected to remain neutral to safeguard the institution's independence. That claim comes from an unnamed source and is unconfirmed by the ECB.

Separately, reports have claimed she may chair the World Economic Forum, but that is unconfirmed speculation: the Forum has declined to comment and no appointment has been announced. Both claims stay unverified until Lagarde or the bodies concerned confirm them.

Reactions to the announcement have also split. Markus Ferber, a German member of the European Parliament for the centre-right European People's Party, said the early resignation sent "the wrong signal" given high inflation, nervous bond markets and looming elections. By contrast, Marcel Fratzscher, president of German think tank DIW, said Lagarde was showing a strong sense of responsibility towards Europe by giving governments and institutions the chance to appoint a successor who will safeguard European values and protect the ECB's independence.

What happens next?

The successor selection process begins now under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union procedures; Costa said it will proceed without delay. Schnabel departs in early January, Lagarde leaves on 7 February, France votes in April and Lane's term ends on 31 May. Whoever is chosen will lead a bank setting interest rates for the 21 countries that use the euro, while managing inflation risks from the oil shock and rising bond yields.
