Indian firms trust AI most, yet few reshape work around it

Confidence is high, transformation is not
Avanade's AI Reality Report, launched on 3 November, puts a number on a gap Indian boardrooms will recognise. In India, 82% of business leaders surveyed say they have high or complete confidence that their teams are using AI effectively. Only 23% say their teams have fundamentally reshaped how they work around it. That is a 59 percentage point gap between confidence and change, wider than the 54 point gap across all markets surveyed. The report states that Indian respondents are the most confident of any market surveyed about their AI standing. 83% believe their company is ahead of competitors in using AI, against a 68% average. 27% say AI is used across all or nearly all relevant parts of the business, against 18% globally.
India leads on AI autonomy
Where India clearly pulls ahead is in handing AI real work. More than one in four (28%) say generative AI in their teams completes defined processes end to end without routine human approval, the highest of any market surveyed, against a 19% average. Only 24% of Indian respondents require explicit human approval before generative AI acts, the lowest share of any market and below the 29% average.
The numbers, India against the world
| Measure | India | All markets surveyed |
|---|---|---|
| Confident in AI use | 82% | 72% |
| Teams fundamentally reshaped around AI | 23% | 18% |
| Gen AI completes defined processes without routine approval | 28% | 19% |
| Significant, measurable operational efficiency gains | 44% | 36% |
| Significant, measurable employee productivity gains | 42% | 36% |
| AI yet to deliver returns justifying spend | 75% | 65% |
| ROI never formally calculated or reviewed | 74% | 66% |
| India ranks first among all markets surveyed for reported operational efficiency gains (44%) and productivity gains (42%). But the financial story runs the other way. 75% of Indian respondents say AI has yet to deliver returns that justify the money and effort spent, and 74% say their organisation has yet to formally calculate AI ROI and have it reviewed by finance or leadership. |
Who is affected, and what to do
For business leaders, the report's message is that the next stage is financial, not technical. Avanade India's managing director said companies that treat AI with the same financial discipline as any other major investment will be best placed to turn early momentum into lasting advantage. For teams, the brakes are familiar. 47% of Indian respondents report integration or scaling problems when deploying AI, the highest of any market surveyed, and 48% name integrating AI with core systems and data as a top challenge to redesigning how they work. 93% of Indian respondents agree leaders could do more to understand AI's capabilities and limitations.
Glossary
- Guardrailed autonomy: AI allowed to act on its own inside pre-set limits, such as a defined process.
- ROI: Return on investment, the financial gain measured against what was spent.
- Fundamental reshaping: Redesigning how teams operate around AI, not just adding AI tools to existing work.
What happens next
No follow-up date for the next edition has been announced. The test the report sets is nearer term: whether Indian firms' next AI budgets arrive with finance-reviewed ROI figures attached. Until the 75% saying returns do not yet justify spend starts to move, the story stays the same, high confidence, real efficiency gains, and a transformation still waiting to be proved in financial terms.
